'Succession' Season 4: Everything We Know So Far

The Roys are back in town, and sooner than you think.

Succession has to be one of the most talked about television shows in the world. The biting dramedy, which follows the members of the squillionaire Roy family as they battle to become the successor to their father’s media empire, has won more Emmys and Golden Globes than you can count and is beloved by everyone from Sienna Miller to Steven Spielberg.

This season, the fourth in the series, follows the Roys in the aftermath of the shocking season three finale, in which Logan Roy (Brian Cox) usurped his three children Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) after their attempted coup – all with a little help from Shiv’s own husband Tom (Matthew MacFadyen). What will the Roy kids do next? And can Shiv and Tom’s marriage survive?

Here is what we know about season four so far.

What is season four of Succession about?

You can assume that the series will broadly follow the same structure of the previous seasons, in which the Roy children all battled for supremacy in the family business. Each season thus far has shown the stock of certain kids rising and falling, but at the end of season three, all three of the most prominent Roy children – Kendall, Shiv and Roman – were all on the outs. Will any of them be able to make it back into the inner circle this season?

More broadly, the trailer poses a question about whether or not Shiv and Tom’s marriage can survive his betrayal after he sided with Logan in the great season three finale bust-up. The season will also see another wedding, this time between son Connor (Alan Ruck) – the one with the presidential aspirations – and his longtime partner Willa.

All of Succession thus far has been a carefully plotted chess game, leading up to the takeover of Waystar Royco, the company founded by Logan Roy in his youth. We have followed Logan through health scares, watched him overcome takeover bids, and seen him as he battled shareholder questions and the general undermining of the business. All the while, he has seemed a steady hand. But at some point, the titular action of the series – succession itself – is going to have to occur. We don’t think it will in season four; given the popularity of Succession, we expect it to drag out for a few more seasons, but we do think that in season four we will get a little closer to finding out which Roy offspring is going to sit in the top seat at the end of all this. (Or maybe it won’t be a Roy child after all!)
