6 Simple Ways to Give Your Bedroom a Full Makeover on a Budget
Giving your space a whole new look isn't as complicated (or expensive) as you'd think.
Whether you're living in a rental or you own your home, your bedroom is likely the room you spend the majority of your time. And for this very reason, it deserves special attention when it comes to decorating. This private little space should be your sanctuary from the world, the room you retreat to at the end of a long day, and somewhere to cosy up to watch your favourite shows. But when was the last time you took a hard look at how this space looks and makes you feel?
You're not alone if you haven't refreshed your space in years. With work and other life commitments, it can be hard to find the time (and money!) to give your space the overhaul it (and you) deserves. We're all about affordable decorating hacks that completely transform a room, and everything in this makeover list can be achieved over one weekend.
From a new linen bedding set to updating your lighting, here are six simple things you can do to give your bedroom a full makeover.
1. Paint
If you've got a relaxed landlord or happen to own your home, freshening up the walls with a fresh lick of paint is one of the most impactful ways to make it look new again or to change the vibe of your space. If you're looking to brighten things up and keep it looking fresh and clean, a simple coat of white will do wonders. If you love colour or want to experiment, opt for a feature wall or go all-in with your favourite tone. Give yourself a cheap blank slate to work from with a new tin from the hardware store.
2. Fresh linen
We can't emphasise enough the importance of a good night's rest and we give a lot of the credit to our luxuriously-soft French flax linens that make falling asleep a breeze. Besides, our extensive colour range makes it super simple to pick out a new tone to brighten your room and give it a whole new look. Warning: picking your favourite colour combination might take a while! If you're unsure what tones might work in your space, follow our guide to the ideal linen colours for you, according to your interior style.
3. Modern lighting
Don't underestimate the power of lighting – it can completely change the look and feel of the room. Do you have a couple of daggy pendant lights in your bedroom? We recommend ditching them for modern alternatives. You can even just swap out the shades of your current lamps and switch out clinical bulbs for warm globes that omit a softer glow. Consider table and floor lamps in the bedroom to up the ambience and create that cosy mood.
4. Beautiful art
Nothing brings a bedroom design together better than a stunning piece of art, especially when it draws in all of your favourite colours and tones and complements your bed. If you're on a budget, framed canvases work really well, as well as framed prints. Where possible, try to support a local artist who might even be able to create something custom for you.
5. New hardware
To avoid buying brand-new furniture, the easiest (and cheapest) way to elevate a bedside table or dresser is to replace the handles or knobs with something more luxe. Simply remove one and bring it along to the hardware store where you'll be able to find a wide range of replacements, from brass to matte black and more decorative options. You'll be surprised at how effective this method is at creating a fresh, custom look.
6. Add a houseplant
Got a boring corner that needs a little love? Add an indoor plant. Bookshelves looking blah? Add an indoor plant. Greenery brings a space to life! Pick up an affordable planter or basket to house your new leafy pals and that's it – you're done. Greenery adds depth and looks like you've spent a lot more time considering your bedroom styling than you actually have. Just make sure you choose plants that will thrive in your bedroom environment such as snake plants, rubber plants, and devil's ivy.
