7 Television Shows You’re Going To Want To Watch In October

The weather might be warming up but that doesn’t mean it’s time to fold away your blankets and give up on Sundays spent streaming in bed. There’s nothing better than a lazy spring morning spent watching one of the many, many new television shows premiering in October that are ripe for the bingeing. This is the best time of year for television lovers, when our favourite shows return to screens and new contenders vie for the crown of most-binge-able. These are some of our favourite things to watch this month.

The Politician

The premise of this series is just a little bit derangeda young man who dreams of being President of the USA mounts a controversial and scandal-mired campaign to win his student body presidential elections in high school. It's basically like if House of Cards met Glee. We know, it all sounds like a lot. But considering this show was dreamt up by Ryan Murphy, the genius showrunner behind series like American Crime Story and Pose, and considering that it features one of the most incredible casts in recent memoryfrom star Ben Platt to Lucy Boynton, Zoey Deutch, Jessica Lange, January Jones, Bette Midler and, deep breath, Gwyneth Paltrowthis is well worth a watch. Stick with it until the final episode and you’ll be treated to one of the best cliffhangers ever aired on television. Bring on season two!

RuPaul’s Drag Race UK

Stan is the home of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the inimitable reality series that celebrates drag culture in all of its fabulous glory. Now, it will play host to the first season of the British iteration, a much-anticipated and much-touted addition to the franchise. RuPaul still serves as host and judge supreme, but he is joined by an incredible array of guest judges including Graham Norton, Alan Carr, Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams, Geri Horner, Cheryl and Little Mix’s Jade Thirwall. Plan Coeur (The Hookup Plan)

Did you watch the first season of Plan Coeur? The underrated French romantic comedy debuted on Netflix earlier this year to minimal buzz, which is a shame because it’s a charming and very binge-able series for any rom-com fans bemoaning the lack of good romantic drama on screens. The first series followed Charlotte, an unlucky in love Parisian whose friends set her up with a gorgeous male escort to help her get over her ex. We think you can guess what happens next. The second series is set to be as sexy and hilarious as the first, so why not binge both in a row, given that each episode is a snackable 30 minutes long. Bon appetit.

When to watch it: Streaming on Netflix from 11 October

World on Fire

It wouldn’t be October without a big, epic period drama from the BBC. World on Fire focuses on WWII but instead of spotlighting the battlefield, it examines the lives of those on the home front struggling to survive. The cast, which includes newcomers Zofia Wichlacz and Jonah Hauer-King as well as veterans like Sean Bean, Lesley Manville and Helen Hunt is unbelievable, and the production design looks suitably gorgeous. Watch this one if you’re a fan of period epics like Downton Abbey and The Forsyte Saga.

When to watch it: Airing weekly on BBC First from 13 October

Modern Love

You might already be familiar with the New York Times column of the same name, or the podcast (also of the same name) that invites celebrities to read said column aloud. Essentially, this is a project that chronicles love stories, the weird and wonderful and wacky love stories we tell ourselves in order to survive. Amazon Prime Video has made an anthology series based on the Modern Love column and it’s set to be one of the most romantic things airing on television this year. The cast includes Tina Fey, Anne Hathaway, Dev Patel, Fleabag’s Andrew Scott (aka the hot priest), John Slattery and Catherine Keener.

When to watch it: Streaming on Amazon Prime Video from 18 October

Living With Yourself

Not one, but two Paul Rudds star in this satirical comedy coming soon to Netflix. The series follows a man who, after undertaking a treatment to improve his life, finds himself replaced by his eerie doppelganger instead. This futuristic show has the air of The Good Place and Forever to it, and is set to be the breakout comedic hit of the month.

When to watch it: Streaming on Netflix from 18 October

Watchmen

This one is for any superhero fans in the building. The latest lavish production from HBO is this adaptation of one of the most iconic and revered comic books of all time, which skewers the tropes of the superhero story at the same time as its exalts them. If you like your superheroes less Marvel-tastic and more gritty, this could be just the television show for you. Plus, with an epic and diverse cast that includes Oscar-winner Regina King, Jeremy Irons and Hong Chau, this might be exactly the action series update we need right now.
