How Often Should You Actually Wash Your Sleepwear?
Be honest: when did you last wash yours?
When it comes to how often you should be washing your sleepwear, the answer isn’t one-size-fits-all. How long do you wear them each night? Are you a hot sleeper? Do pets share your bed? And importantly – what fabric are your pyjamas made from?
The longer you go between washes, the more your sleepwear collects: sweat, skin cells, body oils, and whatever else the day (or night) brings. According to hygiene expert Professor Sally Bloomfield, how often you should wash them comes down to personal habits and how those materials build up over time.
“We all carry certain organisms that are potentially harmful to us if we get them in the wrong place and are potentially harmful to other people if they get transferred to them,” she told The Guardian. “Why do we launder in the first place? Because we don’t want other people to get those organisms.”
Jamie Woodhall, UK Technical and Innovations Manager at Initial Washroom Hygiene echoed the sentiment to Cosmopolitan UK: “Skin particles, sweat and hair will accumulate on your pyjamas over time and, if left long enough, will eventually form a food source for bacteria and mites.” Yikes.
That said, it’s a balancing act. Washing more frequently can be better for your skin and overall hygiene – but it also means more water, more energy, and more wear on your clothes. The goal is to find a middle ground that works for you and your sleep setup.
Read on for a simple guide to how often you should be washing your pyjamas, based on your sleep style.
For very hot sleepers...
If you tend to overheat or experience night sweats, your pyjamas will need more frequent washing – every one to two wears is a good rule of thumb. Opting for breathable fabrics like cotton in short-sleeve and pant options can help regulate temperature overnight, making things more comfortable and potentially extending wear slightly between washes. Hanging your sleepwear out during the day to air can also help keep them fresher for longer.
For fabric-conscious sleepers...
Fabric makes a noticeable difference when it comes to how often you need to wash your pyjamas. Lightweight, breathable cotton is designed for regular wear – soft on skin and comfortable across seasons. While you’ll still want to wash cotton sleepwear every few wears, it holds up well to frequent laundering, making it a practical, low-maintenance option for everyday rotation.
For commando sleepers...
If you skip underwear in bed, you’ll want to wash your pyjama bottoms more frequently – ideally after each wear. It’s a small shift but makes a big difference when it comes to keeping things fresh.
For all-day loungers...
If your pyjamas double as your evening uniform – worn from post-dinner wind-down through to a slow morning coffee – they’ll naturally pick up more throughout the day. In that case, aim to wash them a few times a week. If you want to stretch things out, consider changing into sleepwear closer to bedtime and keeping daytime lounging separate.
For morning showerers...
If you prefer to shower in the morning, you’re bringing the day’s buildup into bed with you. In this case, more frequent washing will help keep your sleepwear feeling clean and comfortable.
For night showerers...
Showering before bed helps extend the life of your pyjamas between washes. If you’re going to sleep clean, not overheating, and only wearing your pyjamas in bed, you can usually get a few extra wears out of them before they need a refresh.
Ultimately, it comes down to paying attention. Do your pyjamas still feel fresh? Are they comfortable against your skin? If the answer’s yes, you’re probably fine to wear them again. And if you’re building out a sleepwear rotation, breathable cotton styles are an easy place to start – low-maintenance and designed to be worn (and washed) on repeat.
