This Is How Often You Should Clean Everything in Your Bathroom

Despite the name, washrooms unfortunately don’t clean themselves.

You’d think the room we wash ourselves in would be the cleanest room in our house, but due to their frequent exposure to moisture and dust, bathrooms can quickly become the dirtiest place in a home.

While scrubbing the entirety of your bathroom can be a dreaded and laborious task, figuring out how often each area of your bathroom needs cleaning will make the process much easier.

Below we’ve outlined the common areas to tidy and detox in your bathroom, and how often to tend to them, so you can continue to bathe in a space that’s just as fresh as you!

Shower – every two weeks

The shower is considered a relatively clean place – given it often has water and soap running through it – but the damp environment makes it a hub for grime and bacteria. Because of this, it’s recommended that showers should be cleaned thoroughly at least every two weeks to keep mould and bacteria growth at bay.

Toilet – at least once a week

Regardless of whether they have a lid or not, toilets harbour an exorbitant amount of bacteria which shouldn’t sit in your home for any longer than a week. Deep cleaning your toilet at least once a week will allow the bacteria in that area to be safely managed and not put anyone at risk of inhaling unwanted particles.

Sink – once a week

Similar to showers, sinks are left wet more often than not. Because of this, the basin, tap, and plug are often coated with a thin layer of bacterial film which should be removed and cleaned once a week to keep the area clean, and reduce the chances of mould growing in and around the area.

Floors – every two weeks

Because bathrooms are high-traffic areas that are often exposed to moisture, the floors need to be swept, vacuumed, and then mopped every two weeks to ensure the area is kept clean, and there are no potential slip hazards.

Mirrors – once a week

Being the area we look at the most in the bathroom, our mirrors should be wiped down thoroughly with glass cleaner once a week. Bathroom mirrors are known to collect dust, debris, and splashback from tooth-brushing and face-washing, so a weekly wipe down will keep grime buildup to a minimum.

Towels – every three days

Contrary to popular belief, it’s recommended that bath towels are washed and replaced with clean ones every three days. Due to their constant contact with water and interaction with bodies and particles floating around in the bathroom, towels should be washed frequently as they often don't dry fully between uses.

Drains – once a week

Sink, shower, and bath drains should be cleaned out and wiped down once a week. Just like the areas of the bathroom they are situated in, drains are constantly in contact with water, so taking the extra time to clean them each week will ensure they aren’t growing bacteria.

Fan – every two months

While this area of the bathroom can be hard to reach, bathroom fans collect hefty amounts of dust and debris, so making sure they’re kept clean is a must. Hopping up on a chair or small step ladder every two months to dust and vacuum your bathroom fan will make all the difference to the overall cleanliness of the space.

Vanity – at least once a week

While you are doing your weekly clean of your mirror and sink, take some time to clear your vanity of products and wipe away any dust or moisture that may have accumulated there. This weekly tidy up will keep your space feeling fresh and stop clutter and grime developing any further.
