A classic colour drawn from nature, the appeal of green is, well, evergreen (pardon the pun).

In fact, according to colour psychology, green has long been associated with balance, harmony, tranquillity and abundance — making it the perfect hue if you seek a little (or a lot) more calm in your home.

So, to discover the best and easiest ways to style some green into our space, we consulted interior designer Jessica Viscarde from the Melbourne-based Eclectic Creative.

From getting leafy to playful pops, read on for her top five green home décor ideas to make your place a dreamy oasis.

1. Plants

To instantly add green to your home, why not start with Mother Nature herself?

“Adding greenery to your space [via plants] is the most natural way to create a lush and vibrant atmosphere,” says Viscarde.

“From leafy ferns to monstera plants, adding different shades of green through indoor plants is perfect for those who want a lively, organic feel. Adding terracotta or second-hand planters and pots helps amplify the green and add personality to your home.”

Aesthetics aside, there is evidence to suggest indoor plants offer several benefits, such as stress reduction, increased focus, a happier mood and, depending on the species and number of plants, better air quality.

2. Statement walls

According to Viscarde, painting your walls and adding colour can dramatically update the look and change the feeling of the space.

“Whether it’s a deep, moody forest green or a soft, calming mint, painting an accent wall in this rich colour will instantly add depth and style to your room,” she explains.

Not sure what to mix it with? Earthy colours — as you would find in nature where green is abundant — are always a safe bet.

“Green pairs beautifully with neutrals, wood tones, and even metallic, so feel free to mix and match,” says Viscarde.

“We also use this a lot in interiors to help bring the outside in, especially if your home is surrounded by trees, or you have an apartment in the treetops!”

3. Furniture and objects

One of the easiest ways to incorporate green into your home is with furniture and decorative items. Don’t love your set-up the first time around? A key benefit of this tip is that you can easily rearrange or reduce the items to adjust the amount of green in the space.

“From velvet emerald sofas to sage green accent chairs, a pop of green furniture can make a bold statement without overwhelming your space,” Viscarde says.

It’s also a decorating method that lends itself to playing with different interior aesthetics, so you are not limited in any way, shape or form.

“Green works well in both modern and vintage-inspired designs, giving you endless options to play with,” she adds.

“[For example], ’70s décor had a real green moment, so it's even fun to try and source and collect retro pieces if that suits your style. Glassware, ceramics, and even soft upholstery add such a fun pop of green.”

4. Bedding

Your bedroom should be your sanctuary, and giving your sheets the green treatment can help you achieve that perfect dreamy vibe.

“I find soft, sage green linens or deep olive layers work well in a bedroom and create a soothing atmosphere that promotes rest and relaxation,” says Viscarde.

“Whether you go for solid green or a mix of green shades or prints, the right bedding can tie the whole room together. Stripes, Checks and even floral go so well together, just play around with proportions to create interest.”

5. Unexpected accents

Don’t forget about the little details! Sometimes, you only need a hint of a hue in an unexpected place to give your space some je ne sais quoi.

“Painting your front door or window frames in a striking shade of green is a playful way to introduce the colour into your home’s exterior,” Viscarde tells the Journal.

“You could also add green tiles to your fireplace surround or kitchen or laundry splashback to surprise and delight.”
