These Are the Common Items You Should Never Have in Your Bedroom

Your bedroom is usually the most comfortable place in the house, so it's tempting to use it as your base to do everything from invoicing to eating dinner, but these extra activities and accumulation of clutter can have a serious impact on your sleeping patterns and your overall mood and wellbeing. You should aim to keep your bedroom as clean and clear at all times to foster a calm and seen environment that'll have you dozing off in no time at all. Refer to the following list for items that you should never (ever) keep in your bedroom (and should remove immediately).

Old technology

As technology evolves each year it's inevitable that we will update our laptops, phones and various gadgets to the latest versions to stay in touch with what's happening in the digital space. It can be tough to consider getting rid of these products that we've paid good money for, but hoarding them in a box isn't useful either. Bedrooms should be as tech-free as possible, so a collection of old technology is a no-no. Do a quick online search to see if your local council has collection or drop-off services you can take advantage of. Or, in the meantime, move them to the garage.

Pets

This one might come as a surprise because many of us snuggle up to our pets at night before we head to sleep. Studies have shown (and you'll know this firsthand if you're a pet owner) that you have a higher chance of waking up during the night due to your pet. They don't necessarily follow the same sleeping patterns as us, so closing the door on your four-legged friend is the best way to guarantee a restful snooze.

Television

There has been significant research conducted on this very topic, and the results show that blue and white light can slow the release of melatonin in our brains which means that our natural process of becoming sleepy is interrupted. It's best to leave the TV to your living room, and keep your boudoir solely as a place to relax, sip tea, and read books before bed.

Food

Besides being messy and the possibility of dropping food on your sheets (!) eating in bed sends the wrong signal to your brain. To establish that your bedroom is solely a place you go to sleep, everyday activities like eating should be done in other areas of the house, even if your cosy doona is calling your name.

Work

With home offices on the rise, it's more important than ever to establish clear boundaries around work and home life, so that you don't feel like you're always stuck at the office. The best way to achieve this is by keeping all work, including documents and equipment, to one part of the house and never (ever) the bedroom.

Garbage

There's really no reason why every room of your apartment needs a dedicated garbage bin, especially your bedroom sanctuary. Make a habit of taking any recycling and rubbish to the kitchen to avoid an accumulation of clutter in your bedroom that can ruin the zen vibes you're looking for. That includes your teacup and water glass.

When it's time to hit the hay, this is the sleeping position you should choose for your best sleep yet.
