7 Bedroom Decorating Trends You'll See Everywhere in 2022
With 2021 coming to a close, it's time to start preparing ourselves for the next year ahead. The beginning of a new year feels exciting and full of potential and refreshing your home is a great way to make you feel excited and like you're starting things fresh. And what better room to start with than your most used space in the home, your bedroom.
Creating a lovely sleep space for yourself is important for mental health and ensuring you get an optimal night's sleep. In 2022 we will be seeing a strong focus on creating homes that are comfortable, embrace sustainable materials, and are calming. And our bedrooms are the room that needs to be most soothing and comfortable in the home.
From sustainable bedding to muted shades, these trends will transform your bedroom into a relaxing sleep sanctuary that you'll be excited to get to each evening.
7 Bedroom Decorating Trends for 2022
1. Sustainable bedding
Many people don't like to follow trends, but this is one everyone should get behind and will hopefully be the new norm moving forward.
An increased awareness of the environmental impact of mass production and buying brand new items has resulted in consumers embracing sustainability and upcycling. Linen bedding is a wonderful choice for your bedroom as it is a more environmentally friendly option.
Not only is linen one of these most luxurious and stylish fabrics, it's also one of the most eco-friendly. Made from flax plant fibres this strong material is resilient and can grow in poor soil, using significantly less water during production than cotton or polyester. The entire flax plant can be used.
Linen is also biodegradable (only when eco-friendly dyestuff like what is used at Bed Threads), meaning it won't rot in landfill, and naturally moth resistant.
2. Wooden furniture
Timber bed frames and bedside tables are the go-to furniture options for bedrooms in 2022. Timber brings a natural element to a bedroom as it exudes a calming look that brings warmth to a space.
This material will work with any interior decor style so you won't need to re-arrange all of your room if you decide to introduce a wooden element to your boudoir.
The last few years has seen a preference for lighter coloured timbers, but 2022 will shine a spotlight on darker wood stains. "Blonde oak is versatile and very pretty, but many designers are turning to dark, rich walnut to create moody, dramatic spaces that draw you in," says interior stylist Jess Bellef.
3. Designing for comfort
A new appreciation for comfort in the home will continue to increase in popularity in 2022. With the turmoil of the last two years, we have turned our attention to creating homes that feel peaceful and comfortable. As far as bedroom design goes, this means creating a sleep sanctuary you can't wait to curl up in at the end of the day.
Opt for luxe bedding, cushions, plush rugs, warm lighting, and candles to set the mood for relaxation and an optimal night's sleep.
4. Neutral and muted shades
Soft and muted shades are the favoured options for 2022, as they create a calming ambience in a bedroom. Turn to our Oatmeal, Lavender, Terracotta, Sage, and Mineral colourways for bedding.
In 2022 there will be a shift to favouring more warm-toned neutrals in particular which help foster a feeling of intimacy and comfort. "Warm neutrals in ivory, greiges, and browns create the perfect cocooning colour palette," says the team at Wattyl Paints who have dubbed warm neutral tones as one of 2022's biggest trending paint choices. Leading paint retailer Dulux have also forecast warm neutrals to be the star of 2022 as they foster "a feeling of warmth and intimacy in any space."
Incorporating neutral tones into your space be it in the wall colour, bedding, or flooring, can also make a room appear larger, more clean, and welcoming - great for those who have smaller bedrooms.
5. Pops of colour
Although design trends of 2022 are defined by soft, natural tones, lovers of bright and bold hues will be pleased to hear that injecting a playful pop of colour to your space will be on-trend. This can be employed through cushions, a throw, or even your choice of artwork. "Fun and irreverence in design will be key for 2022, whether it’s via playful shapes or unexpected applications of colour and pattern," says Jess Bellef.
Lean into the Pantone Fashion Colour Trend Report Spring/Summer 2022 which embraced 'Sudan Brown', a Rust tone, and 'Orchid Bloom', a Lilac hue. “Colours that celebrate our desire to break the boundaries satisfy our fervent need for the playful creativity and unconstrained visual expression we are seeking as we enter into this time,” stated Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Colour Institute, in a press release.
6. Wallpaper
Wallpaper is a great, non permanent way to add texture and pattern to a space. Nature-inspired designs with floral and/or tropical motifs in particular will be starring in 2022 as we look toward bringing the outdoors in.
7. Sheer curtains
Sheers are set to remain the window treatment of choice for bedrooms in 2022. They provide softness, texture, and movement. They are a great way to enhance your bedroom without overpowering the decor within.
