From cult literary hits to canonical classics, the next wave of book-to-screen adaptations is shaping up to be unusually (and excitingly) stacked.
And no, we don’t just mean the forthcoming duet of Austen releases (writer Dolly Alderton’s take on Pride and Prejudice and Australian author Diana Reid’s Sense and Sensibility).
There are even more titles we’re already clearing space on our watchlists for – stories that captured us on the page, now reimagined through the lens of some of the most compelling directors and actors working today.
Below, we’ve rounded up the literary adaptations worth reading before they arrive on big and small screens.
1. Carrie
Coming to Prime Video
Before the iconic 1976 film and the slightly less iconic 2013 adaptation, there was Stephen King’s 1974 novel, Carrie. Now, the classic horror text is getting the Mike Flanagan treatment, just in time for Halloween.

2. Dig
Platform to be announced
This upcoming TV show was created by Michael Schur and Amy Poehler, so we know it’s going to be hilarious. Based on Kate Myers’s novel Excavations, it follows four women at an archaeological dig in Greece where they discover a very, very big secret.

3. East of Eden
Coming to Netflix
Starring Florence Pugh, this series – based on John Steinbeck's 1952 novel – revolves around successive generations of two families living on Californian farmland. Fun fact: the TV show is produced by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film adaptation of the novel.

4. The Good Daughter
Coming to Sky and NOW
Rose Byrne and Meghann Fahy play estranged sisters forced to confront past trauma in this crime drama series based on Karin Slaughter’s bestselling thriller of the same name. This won’t be a light watch, but if it’s anything like its source material – it will be an excellent one.

5. Guarding Stars
Coming to Netflix
Leads of two of the biggest shows of the noughties, Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Jared Padalecki (Supernatural) star in this Netflix film. Based on Katherine Center’s rom-com novel The Bodyguard, the story centres on a famous actor and his unassuming protector.

6. Klara and the Sun
Coming to theatres
Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Jenna Ortega, this dystopian sci-fi drama follows a robot named Klara who acts as an ‘artificial friend’ for a heartbroken human family. Based on the 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, expect existential themes through a stylish lens.

7. The Love Hypothesis
Coming to Prime Video
Ali Hazelwood’s 2021 romance novel began as Star Wars fan fiction and became a New York Times bestseller. The story follows a PhD candidate and a professor who pretend to be in a relationship – in the name of science, of course. The film stars Riverdale's Lili Reinhart, so we know she’ll play the drama to perfection.

8. Lupin Part 4
Coming to Netflix
Omar Sy returns as the charming gentleman thief Assane Diop in the fourth instalment of Netflix’s French-language hit. Inspired by Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin stories, the series ingeniously reimagines the literary character’s adventures in a modern-day Parisian setting.

9. Other Mommy
Coming to theatres
Based on Josh Malerman’s 2024 novel Incidents Around the House, if the film is anywhere near as spooky as the book, you’ll be sleeping with the lights on for weeks. Starring Jessica Chastain, it centres on Bela, an eight-year-old girl facing a sinister entity living in her closet.

10. Practical Magic 2
Coming to theatres
Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel Practical Magic was adapted into the ultra-cosy 1998 film of the same name, and over time became a beloved cult classic. Now, Sandra Bullock and our Nicole are back to reprise their roles for Practical Magic 2, based on Hoffman’s 2021 follow-up, The Book of Magic.

11. Pride and Prejudice
Coming to Netflix
Jane Austen’s 1813 novel is one of those perennial texts that will be reinterpreted for the rest of time, and we’re not mad about it – especially with acclaimed author and screenwriter Dolly Alderton at the helm. The latest TV series stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet, Jack Lowden as Mr Darcy and Olivia Colman as Mrs Bennet, and is written by Dolly Alderton.

12. Sense and Sensibility
Coming to theatres
While we’re on the topic of enduring favourites penned by Jane Austen, we’re getting another Sense and Sensibility interpretation, this time with a screenplay by Aussie author Diana Reid and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, respectively.

13. Slow Horses Season 6
Coming to Apple TV+
Ever since Gary Oldman stepped into the role of slovenly spy Jackson Lamb, the world has fallen in love with Slow Horses, the TV adaptation of Mick Herron's espionage novel series. Season 6 will be based on two books from the saga, Joe Country (Book 6) and Slough House (Book 7).

14. Sunrise on the Reaping
Coming to theatres
Based on Suzanne Collins’s second prequel novel to the original The Hunger Games trilogy, this film is set 24 years before the events of the original book, focusing on 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th annual Hunger Games.

15. Verity
Coming to theatres
This “romantic thriller” is adapted from the novel of the same name by Colleen Hoover, the author behind the global sensation It Ends With Us. It tells the story of Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a writer hired to complete a bestselling book series after its original author, Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), is left unable to write.

16. Wicker
Coming to theatres
Never before has a sentient basket looked this good. Based on Ursula Wills-Jones’s short story The Wicker Husband, this film reimagining stars Olivia Colman as an ostracised fisherwoman and Alexander Skarsgård as her rattan spouse.
