This Old-School Decorating Trend Is Making a Stylish Comeback

It signals a return to softer, more romantic interiors, and we're completely on board.

Furniture is losing its legs! Well, not really; we're just witnessing the return of skirted furniture after nearly two decades of spindly mid-century stilts propping up all manner of furnishings, portable and handsome and curiously tense. A luscious skirt is antithetical in form and function; it evokes a languid commitment to space, giving it an anti-rental feeling. You'll spot it on sofas, beds, ottomans and kitchen islands; anything with legs is getting a hem.

The standard explanation is that trends are cyclical: after a period of collective amnesia, things once deemed dated return to an enthusiastic cultural embrace. This is true, but tells you little about the why.

Whenever a valance billows back into vogue, people are orienting toward home because whatever’s going on outside their doors is more precarious than usual; and this return often goes hand in hand with a general desire to put down roots. Not to suggest that the state of things has people stapling cloth to their kitchen cabinets with the vim of a doomsday prepper, but rather that we've decided to lavish our spaces with particular attention closer to actual furnishing than to curating.

A cute outfit on your bed frame isn't a portent of economic collapse, and fancy cascading fabric is no harbinger of recession. The return of this trend appears to be emblematic of something more straightforward: the desire to make a place feel like yours, with a deal of permanence independent of whatever your lease says.

Skirts Through The Ages

Let's visit the Victorian era for a moment: the Industrial Revolution had hauled people off the land and into rented rooms in cities that were loud, acrid, coated with soot – decidedly indelicate – and the respectable answer was to barricade the parlour against all of it. Mass production had just made fabric cheaper, so anything that held still for more than a second was fair game for upholstering. Common were curtains heavy as stage drapes, sofas you could get lost in, skirts pooling off the tables onto the floor.

Skirts returned in a thriftier key through the 1930s and '40s, when there was little money for permanence but plenty of appetite for any feeling of security. The sink skirt, a length of cotton tacked under the basin, dressed up cottage and farmhouse kitchens and hid the plumbing for the cost of a remnant. The skirted dressing table ran the same con in the bedroom: a little borrowed Hollywood through the Depression and the war, the trick being to coax some glamour out of the plain furniture you already owned.

In the 1980s, trend forecaster Faith Popcorn talked about 'cocooning' (the desire to make home the centre of everything), a cultural reflex she observed whenever times turned uncertain. The 80s obliged this view, and its dreamy suburban interiors reflected an English country home: chintz, ruffles and deep gathered skirts, a mode implying a house had been in the family for two hundred years.

Laura Ashley florals did it for British bedrooms, while in New York the decorator Mario Buatta, nicknamed the Prince of Chintz, designed skirted tables, ruffled everything, and florals to the horizon; his clients included Henry Ford II and Mariah Carey.

Industrial churn, then a Depression and a world war, then the boom-and-bust '80s. Every time the world outside felt unsettled, people doubled down on the home front.

So Why Now?

Run the tape on the last few years: a pandemic that shrank the world to the size of your hallway; a low, constant drone of economic and political unease; the crispy-retina fatigue of screen life. And with that, a generation who have done everything right, yet still can't buy the floor they're standing on, are renting into their forties, and living in rooms they aren't allowed to paint. So why wait to indulge this feeling? Short of wallpapering the place with copies of the deed, you can stake a claim with panache – lining the nest with linen and fine cottons.

The Modern Touch

Architectural designer Dominique Hage loves the trend, and points out it reaches into kitchen cabinetry too, a cheap stand-in when you can't stretch to cabinet doors. That's the renter's predicament in a sentence: you can't afford the joinery, or you aren't allowed to install it, so you tack a length of pleated linen to a rail for a fraction of the price and buy the lived-in look minus the renovation.

"It's a bit kitschy," Hage says, "but can be really cool when done well." She describes the look as a "really flouncy intentionally grandma-chic element in the room" that "can be matched throughout or contrasted with more utilitarian details", which is where the trend diverges from its previous iterations and enjoys its modern configuration.

The easiest place to start is the one piece of skirted furniture that's most familiar: the bed. A linen valance is the original skirt, and a low-stakes commitment. It covers the bed frame's legs (and whatever you've shoved underneath) and drops a low, weighted line of linen to the floor. The eye gets one clean line instead of a tangle of legs and shadow, giving the bed a settled look which pulls the room together neatly around it.

It's all about decorating of course, but trends always reveal a collective mood, and we dress our furniture when we want to feel settled rather than provisional. Where the '80s went all-in on ruffled florals (occasionally swaddled in protective plastic, lest a human being enjoy them), the 2026 skirt is tailored: crisp box pleats, clean hems, plain natural fabrics, one beautiful drape of cloth instead of three storeys of frill. Bang on the zeitgeist's schedule, the valance unfurls and relaxes the visual tension of a tapered minimalist leg or shin-maiming corner. Today's valance has staying power.
