11 New Shows You’re Going to Want to Stream in September

From 'Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power' to 'The Bear'.

Another huge month of television awaits us in September and, quite frankly, we cannot wait. Whether you’re excited for huge fantasy series like Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, want to watch an American Gigolo remake or are patiently awaiting the launch of Netflix’s nostalgia-saturated Heartbreak High reboot, there’s something for everyone this month.

From murder mysteries to comedy thrillers, these are the must-see TV shows that will be steering the conversation this September.

1. Rings of Power

Where can I watch it? Prime Video

They’re calling it the world’s most expensive television show, and given Prime Video has spent hundreds of millions of dollars making this first season alone, the moniker seems apt. Rings of Power is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit stories that you might remember from the beloved Peter Jackson films of your youth, focusing on the rise of Sauron in an early age of Middle Earth, where elves Galadriel (played here by Morfydd Clark) and Elrond (Robert Aramayo) are battling an evil unknown. This series is epic, huge and fantastical in the extreme, and has us dreaming of dusting off our old Lord of the Rings boxsets. Fantasy fans won’t want to miss this.

2. Devil In Ohio

Where can I watch it? Netflix

Emily Deschanel stars in this chilling true crime series about a psychologist who takes one of her patients, an escapee from a mysterious cult, and welcomes her into her home. The decision proves disastrous, as her family and livelihood are put in danger, all while the mystery of this cult becomes more and more terrifying. Anyone who loves a true crime series, and has been looking for something to binge-watch after the end of Under The Banner Of Heaven, will definitely want to check this Netflix series out.

3. Savage River

Where can I watch it? ABC iView

Katherine Langford, of 13 Reasons Why fame, has returned to Australia to make this gripping ABC series, about a young woman trying to move on from the past, and the rural town who doesn’t want to let her forget. Langford stars as Miki, freshly released from prison and back in her hometown trying to forget what happened to her – but others aren’t so sure. The cast for this local drama is fantastic, including Virginia Gay and Mark Coles Smith. We’ll definitely be tuning in.

4. Wedding Season

Where can I watch it? Disney+

Ready or Not meets Four Weddings and a Funeral in this very enjoyable comedy-thriller about a couple who meet cute at a wedding, only to later be implicated in a terrible murder. As the pair go on the run to prove their innocence, will their new romance make it through? Rosa Salazar stars in this charming series, which is the first original television show to be produced by Disney+ in the UK.

5. American Gigolo

Where can I watch it? Prime Video

Jon Bernthal, our forever crush, stars in this sexy remake of the iconic Richard Gere film, streaming this month on Stan. The story follows an escort wrongfully imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit in the aftermath of his release, struggling to put together the pieces of his life. Expect it to be moody and very, very sexy – we think fans of the original film will be very pleased with this reboot.

6. Abbott Elementary

Where can I watch it? Disney+

This cult favourite comedy is back for a second season this month, hot off its smash-hit first season (and multiple Emmy nominations). Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, think of Abbott Elementary as a sort of Parks and Recreation-style mockumentary set inside a primary school in Philadelphia, where the teachers meet a fresh set of hilarity every single day. It’s sweet and silly and, at episodes clocking in around the 20-ish minute mark, it’s some of the easiest watching around.

7. The Serpent Queen

Where can I watch it? Starz

We love nothing more than a good period drama, especially one with high intrigue, drama, and production values. The Serpent Queen follows the life of Catherine Medici, who used her intelligence, resilience and cunning to rule the French court for 50 years. Samantha Morton stars as Catherine de Medici and Charles Dance as Pope Clement VII.

8. Heartbreak High

Where can I watch it? Netflix

It’s been a long time since the original Heartbreak High aired in the ‘90s, but Netflix has brought Hartley High back, with a whole new cast of heartbreakers and troublemakers stalking the school halls. This show is like an Australian Sex Education and is super charming and full of Aussie comedy, scenery, and stylings. The story follows two best friends after a terrible fight severs their relationship, leaving both to figure out their place in the school social strata without each other to lean on. Heartbreak High is a lot of fun, and we predict it will be beloved by audiences all around the world.

9. The Handmaid's Tale

Where can I watch it? Hulu

The fifth season of The Handmaid's Tale arrives fast-tracked from the US on SBS this month. Elisabeth Moss headlines the show that has been a talking point since it first launched, and promises to be even more prescient this month in the light of recent events in the US. The fifth season will follow Moss’ June in the aftermath of the shocking events of the final episode, while continuing to fight back against oppressive Gilead from Canada, and hope to save her daughter Hannah.

10. Andor

Where can I watch it? Disney+

Star Wars fans are very excited about Andor, a new prequel starring Diego Luna of Rogue One fame following his character Cassian Andor as he begins his rebellion journey. For two seasons, Andor will follow the antics of the Rebels as they fight the Empire, leading up to the events of Rogue One and, after that, A New Hope. If you’ve been missing Star Wars since the end of Obi-Wan, Andor might be exactly the show you need. This show was originally intended to premiere in August, but Disney bumped it back a month to give it some space from House of the Dragon and Rings of Power, and us television fans are very grateful.

11. The Bear

Where can I watch it? Hulu

Describing a show as anxiety-inducing might not sound appealing, but this thrilling, ambitious, whip-smart, and comedic series has been described as the best new TV show of 2022. Most of the series is set in the kitchen of a sandwich shop in Chicago which the protagonist takes over after a heartbreaking death in his family. It explores themes of grief, addiction, failure, dynamics, and family dynamics and is a must-watch this month, particularly for those who enjoyed Succession.
