10 Things to Clean Before the Holidays for a Stress-Free Break

Don't let a messy house ruin joyous times in your home.

As the festive season approaches, many of us are considering how to get our homes prepped for entertaining and hosting guests. The holidays can be a stressful time and a whirlwind of back-to-back events, but having a clean home can help alleviate some of the stress, set the perfect stage for celebration, and allow you to unwind in a more organised space.

Don't let a messy house ruin joyous times in your home!

Below, we're looking at 10 things to clean before the festive season so you can have a stress-free holiday.

1. Fridge

If you're entertaining this year, having a clean and organised fridge will maximise storage space for holiday groceries and leftovers and make it easier to find items quickly when you need to cook. Check expiration dates and dispose of any expired or spoiled items – make way for the party food!

2. Windows

Another cleaning task we often put on the back burner is cleaning windows. Now is the time to do it! Having clean windows is a simple yet effective way to enhance your home's appearance and create a more inviting atmosphere.

3. Rugs

When was the last time you cleaned any of the rugs in your home? Chances are it's been a while. Rugs act as filters, trapping dirt, dust, allergens, and other particles, so a decent clean will help remove these contaminants, preventing them from circulating in the air. You'll likely also notice that your living space will look that extra bit more vibrant and well-maintained.

4. Outdoor area

If you're planning on spending a decent amount of time in your outdoor space this season, giving it a good clean will make it a more comfortable and inviting environment – no one wants to sit on a dirty chair!

Whether you're living in the northern hemisphere and want to relax with a cup of hot cocoa by the outdoor fire, or you're in the southern hemisphere and plan on having a backyard BBQ, a clean outdoor space will give you more room for relaxing and entertaining.

5. Oven

The festive season often involves a lot of cooking, and a dirty oven will only hinder the process! Grease and food debris in the oven can become fire hazards, especially at higher temperatures so ensure it's clean and ready to go.

6. Entryway

Your entryway is the first thing guests – and you – see when you enter the house, so making sure it's clean and organised will help welcome everyone and set the tone for the rest of your home.

7. Linen closet

Over time, linen closets can accumulate unnecessary items, old bedding, or mismatched sets. If you have people staying with you, save yourself the hassle of rifling through everything to find the right towel or fresh sheets by giving your linen closet a clear-out.

8. Guestroom

A clean and well-maintained guest room reflects positively on your hospitality and will help ensure your guests are nice and comfortable. Make sure the linen on the bed is washed, there's a dedicated space for them to put their belongings, and that the general space has been rid of dust.

9. Your nice serveware

Chances are you only bring out your finest serveware for special occasions like the festive season. If it hasn't been touched in a while, make sure it's clean and ready to go. If you're planning on using nice silverware, give it a good polish with a designated silver polish or a homemade paste made of baking soda and water.

10. Upholstery

If your upholstered furniture is looking a little lacklustre, it might be in need of a clean. Upholstered furniture can accumulate dust, allergens, and bacteria over time which can make it look dull and dirty. Prioritise the furniture in your living room where you're likely spend a good amount of time during the silly season.
