How I Transformed My Rental Bathroom in 5 Easy Steps

Millennial grey? Not today.

If you couldn’t tell by the above sell or any previous articles I’ve written, millennial grey and I don’t get along. In almost every room of my rental apartment I’ve successfully deflected the fact that my home really is just a box made up of 3-4 different shades of the inbetween shade, my bathroom however, is a little bit trickier to mask.

In an ideal world my bathroom looks like Jessie Bush’s. But while I’m renting and abiding by Australian bathroom laws and standards, the subdued tiled cubicle in my home must suffice.

Apologies for not putting a jump scare warning before the above 'before' images. As you can see, she needs a little work.

Applying lessons I’ve learnt through other areas of my home which have undergone major anti-millenial grey makeovers, I began my bathroom transformation.

For anyone stuck with a lacklustre rental bathroom, don’t worry, there is hope, just follow these steps and you'll be bathing in a space far nicer than the one pictured in your real estate listing.

2. Use cosmetics as decor

I never thought to keep my cosmetics on display in the bathroom, they’re usually kept on a sideboard in my bedroom, but I selected some of my faves to pepper around the vanity area and watched the space transform instantly! From my favourite perfume to spending a few dollars more on my favourite (and very aesthetically pleasing) toothpaste, I created the perfect little cluster moment to adore each time I stepped into my bathroom.

3. Plants enliven any space

As a plant lover, I was shocked to realise I had been keeping my bathroom a plant-free space up until now. Adding two medium-sized potted plants to my bathroom drew my eyes away from my bathroom’s dull confines and added an extra layer of depth to an otherwise boring room.

4. Let there be (no down)light!

As a downlight hater in every other room of my home, I tried the same lamp-loving approach in my bathroom and was immediately obsessed with the results. Sitting atop my bathroom vanity bench, my lamp was able to add a sense of moodiness to the space, which was definitely lacking before.

5. Shower essentials only

I’ve always kept my hair products in my shower, but after realising I only wash my hair on Sundays (don’t come for me), I decided to store my shampoo and conditioner in my mirrored cupboard and just kept my bathing essentials on my shower ledge. Taking away some of my bottled products really elevated my shower area, and gave the space a hotel feel – something I never thought would be possible in a space like this!
