How to Make Your Pet’s Bed Less of an Eyesore
Don't let your furry friend's sleeping space cramp your home's style.
As humans, we have the luxury of choosing between a plethora of different homewares to suit our personal interior styles, but when it comes to selecting wares for our four-legged friends, the options aren’t as endless.
Most of the time they end up sleeping in our beds anyway, but on those nights when you both want your own space, it’s always good to give them the option of having their own sleeping quarters.
While it’s certainly not the end of the world if your pet has a hot pink, bone print, plush donut bed that doesn’t fit your home's neutral minimalist interiors. But if you want to, there are a few things you can do to make your pet’s sleeping space less of an eyesore.
Ahead, we look at six ways to zhuzh up your pet's sleeping area to fit in with your home's interior style.
1. Cover it with a blanket or throw
This is a simple, but very effective solution when it comes to trying to mask your pet’s bed in your home. Try finding a blanket or throw that would fit with your home's interior in terms of tone and texture, and lay it over your furry friend's bed. If you have a spare flat sheet floating around, this is the perfect way to use it.
2. Decorate around it
Most of the time, pet beds occupy a space on the floor. If you’re finding their bed is becoming a distraction and taking away from everything else you have going on in the room, try directing people’s eyes upwards by decorating above and around it. Adding prints, tall plants, and pendant lights will immediately draw eyes upwards and away from your pet’s sleeping space.
3. Accessorise
Add a little bit of spice to your four-legged friend's sleeping area by placing a throw cushion or two on their bed. If their bed lives in your living room and you have throw cushions on your couch, use cushions that match the ones you already have to keep everything looking consistent.
4. Thrift a basket
Great Dane owners and pretty much anyone who has a pet larger than a cat – we’re sorry you most likely won’t be able to execute this solution. But for those with tiny doggos and cuddly kittens – keep your eyes peeled for a cane or wicker basket in your local thrift store. Place your pet’s bed inside and voilá! You’ve just created a stylish safe haven for their slumber.
5. Dedicate a spot on the lounge
Many of our pets already take up prime real estate on our couches, but if you want them to feel like part of this space is their own, add a throw or blanket on their favourite spot. This will show them where they should be sleeping and also allow you to chuck the blanket in the wash when it gets a little hairy, keeping your couch clean.
6. Upgrade their bed to an armchair
This is another idea for those who own pets on the smaller side. If your bedroom or living room is looking a little bare and you're not a fan of the pet bed options that are available, start searching for an armchair that suits your home's interiors. Decorate it with throws and pillows which will also protect your new furniture addition from their fur and any potential dirt.
