10 New Series to Jump Into This January

From the long-awaited return of 'Severance' to second seasons of 'Black Snow', 'The Rig', and 'XO, Kitty', January is set to kick off the year with some incredible storytelling.

Need a New Year’s Resolution? Here’s one: preserve your precious time scrolling for entertainment and watch these recommendations instead!

With this new year comes brand new seasons of some of your favourite series, including Severance, Black Snow, Harlem, and XO, Kitty. Or if you’re ready to embark on a new journey altogether, Nordic noir thriller The Breakthrough promises to get your spidey senses tingling, while This is Us creator Dan Fogelman’s new drama brings Sterling K. Brown back to our screens.

Whatever your flavour, there’s plenty on the menu thanks to these 10 new series worth jumping into this January.

1. Black Snow, Season 2

Where Can I watch it? On BBC iPlayer

After rave reviews and a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score on Season 1, it’s no surprise this gripping Australian crime drama series was renewed for a second act. Detective James Cormack (played by Vikings’ warrior Travis Fimmel) is back on the cold case trail – actually, make that plural. Investigating both the disappearance of a young girl named Zoe Jacobs who vanished on her 21st birthday as well as his own brother who has been missing since they were kids, Cormack’s work and private life converge in season 2 of this hit murder mystery filmed on the Sunshine Coast.

2. The Breakthrough

Where Can I watch it? On Netflix

The Swedes excel at many things: clean air, innovative design, meatballs, and chilling Nordic noir. Based on the nonfiction book The Breakthrough: How the Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping, this four-part true crime series follows a detective and genealogist trying to catch the killer responsible for a shocking double homicide 16 years ago that remains Sweden’s second-largest murder investigation to date.

3. Harlem, Season 3

Where Can I watch it? On Prime

We first met best friends Quinn (Grace Byers), Tye (Jerrie Johnson), Camille (Meagan Good) and Angie (Shoniqua Shandai), back in 2021 when Tracy Oliver’s Harlem made its hilarious debut. Two seasons later and it feels like we’re part of the crew, walking alongside these BFF’s as they navigate love, friendship, career, motherhood, and everything else life throws at women. Returning with long-awaited answers after season 2’s dramatic cliff hanger, Harlem’s third act is as funny as it is heartfelt.

4. Missing You

Where Can I watch it? On Netflix

Everyone has a wild dating app story, but have you ever matched with your missing fiancé who vanished over a decade ago? In Missing You, next level ghosting victim Detective Kat Donovan (played by Slow Horses’ Rosalind Eleazar) discovers her estranged lover’s profile mid-swiping spree. Adapted from Harlan Coben’s novel of the same name, Donovan delves deeper into the past, leading her to reopen her father’s unsolved murder case fuelled by new suspicions.

5. On Call

Where Can I watch it? Amazon Prime

Based in Long Beach, On Call is an action-packed police drama that swaps the good cop, bad cop trope for something a little different: old cop / new cop. Troian Bellisario (Pretty Little Liars) fills the veteran role as Traci Harmon, an officer who’s been on the beat for over a decade, paired with rookie officer Alex Diaz (played by The Good Doctor’s Brandon Larracuente) as they patrol the Californian port town. The use of hand-held, bodycam and dash-cam footage gives this series a fresh visual language, setting it apart from other more predictable police procedurals.

6. Paradise

Where Can I watch it? On Disney+

Directed by This is Us creator Dan Fogelman and starring Sterling K. Brown, James Marsden, and Julianne Nicholson, Paradise offers mystery, murder, and social commentary in droves. Over eight gripping episodes, Brown plays Secret Service agent Xavier Collins, who becomes embroiled in a murder case after guarding the former President of the United States, Cal Bradford, played by Marsden. In the works for many years, Paradise will finally make its debut in the last week of Jan.

7. The Recruit, Season 2

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before catapulted Noah Centineo to teen heartthrob status – and while he’ll always hold a special place in our hearts as Peter Kavinsky, it might be time to let him grow up. In the spy adventure series The Recruit, Centineo plays Owen Hendricks, a bright lawyer and CIA recruit drawn into an international conspiracy full of dangerous people playing dangerous games. After a jaw-dropping end to season 1 that left us wondering who’d survive what, this six-episode second season has arrived with answers.

8. The Rig, Season 2

Where can I watch it? On Amazon

We first met Emily Hampshire (Schitt's Creek) Martin Compston (Line of Duty) and Iain Glen (Mrs. Wilson) as part of the Kinloch Bravo team engulfed in a mysterious fog while working on the North Sea oil rig. Dubbed ‘Eco horror’, season 2 of the supernatural thriller finds the surviving crew trapped in the Arctic Circle as they deal with the aftermath of a devastating tsunami, all while trying to protect themselves with new threats from the deep and dark unknown.

9. Severance, Season 2

Where can I watch it? On Apple TV+

After almost three years of teasing, Apple TV+’s dystopian workplace thriller, Severance, is finally returning to our screens. Directed by Ben Stiller, the Eternal Sunshine-esque allure of achieving the ultimate work/life balance via a memory erasing microchip captivated us all, as the never-ending corridors of Lumon Industries led to nothing but dead ends. Or so we thought. Costing an estimated $20 million per episode, season 2 promises to answer all our innie and outie questions – and no, we’re not talking about our bellybuttons.

10. XO, Kitty Season 2

Where can I watch it? On Netflix

Author and screenwriter Jenny Han adds another jewel to her YA literary adaptation crown with the second season of rom-com drama XO, Kitty. A spinoff of Han’s much-loved To All the Boys I’ve Ever Loved Before trilogy, XO, Kitty follows Lara Jean’s younger sister Katherine “Kitty” Song Covey to Seoul, where she’s studying abroad for a year. Falling in and out of love must be in Covey DNA, as Kitty follows in her sister’s curious, cupid-like footsteps, with, as we’ve come to expect, mixed results.
