10 Must-Watch New TV Shows to Stream This July
From 'Bosch' and 'Dexter' spin-offs to Lena Dunham’s highly anticipated rom-com, 'Too Much', and the third and final season of 'The Summer I Turned Pretty', these are the 10 best new series dropping in July.
As we enter the second half of a year that simultaneously feels faster than the speed of light and slower than a snail on a Sunday drive, it’s important to indulge in a little escapism. And where better to escape than on a ten-episode trip to New York City with an infamous serial killer in Dexter: Resurrection? Or how about a relocation to London with Hacks’s Meg Stalter and The White Lotus’s Will Sharpe in Lena Dunham’s new series, Too Much? Or better yet, escape planet earth altogether and take an intergalactic tour of the Cleon Empire in Season 3 of the sci-fi saga, Foundation. Throw in second seasons of British dark comedy Such Brave Girls and the Tom Sturridge led fantasy series The Sandman alongside the final season of coming-of-age cult-classic The Summer I Turned Pretty, and you’re set for quite a journey this July.

1. Ballard
Where Can I Watch It? Prime Video
From Bosch to Bosch: Legacy and now Ballard, it’s clear we can’t get enough of the police procedural that debuted on our screens over a decade ago. In this latest spinoff, Maggie Q stars as Detective Renée Ballard, the homicide detective we met in the series finale of Bosch: Legacy. Known for her ability to melt cold cases in the LAPD, Ballard’s crime quests will also be based off Michael Connelly’s best-selling books, with now retired (king) Harry Bosch offering some veteran assistance over ten captivating episodes.

2. Dexter: Resurrection
Where Can I Watch It? Paramount+
Speaking of spinoffs, this serial killer’s story seemingly knows no end. Dexter is back, yet again, this time in the aptly named Dexter: Resurrection, set in New York City. On a trip to meet new serial killers (as you do) Dexter connects with an underground society of slayers. But have his murderous memories finally caught up with him? Over ten episodes, he’s visited by visions of his victims – including Brian Moser (Christian Camargo) and Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits) – who haunt him through hallucinations. Aside from Michael C. Hall reprising his role, the star-studded cast also includes Peter Dinklage and Uma Thurman.

3. Foundation, Season 3
Where Can I Watch It? Apple TV+
Essential viewing for Dune and Star Wars fans, Foundation is a sci-fi sleeper hit set over centuries in space. Based on Isaac Asimov's prolific novels of the same name, the series tells the story of the Cleon Empire, ruler of the galaxy for a colossal 12,000 years. But it’s losing its multi-millennia grip, with season 3 set to pick up precisely 152 years after the second season amidst a power battle between an eroding Cleon Empire and a flourishing Foundation. Beyond that, villainous warlord the Mule (Game of Thrones’ Pilou Asbæk) plays a central role in this new season, armed with might and mind control for good measure.

4. The Hunting Wives
Where Can I Watch It? Netflix
A series adaptation of May Cobb’s best-selling novel, The Hunting Wives follows Sophie (played by Brittany Snow) and her family as they swap the East Coast for East Texas. Sophie’s not alone in the Lone Star State for long, soon falling for the charismatic socialite Margo Banks (played by Billions’s Malin Åkerman). But her infatuation quickly sends her into a spiral of seduction and ultimately murder in this eight-episode twist-heavy thriller.

5. The Sandman, Season 2
Where Can I Watch It? Netflix
Adapted from the comic book of the same name, the second and final season of dark fantasy series The Sandman follows Dream (played by Tom Sturridge) as he reckons with his idea of who he is vs who he has been to all the people in his orbit. A story of reclamation and perhaps even some redemption, season 2 sees Morpheus’s past mistakes – we’re talking thousands of years’ worth – finally catch up to him, despite his seemingly successful restoration trip in season 1. And despite its fair share of controversy (well worth a google), the team behind The Sandman say they always planned on a two season run, gifting us no less than twelve episodes of a slow goodbye.

6. Such Brave Girls, Season 2
Where Can I Watch It? Disney+
In the words of Such Brave Girls creator and lead actress Kat Sadler, “We’re back, and we’re so much worse.” Dark comedy at its best, the outrageous and irreverent British sitcom centres around sisters Josie and Billie and the dismal living situation they’re in with their mum, Deb. High in dysfunctional and low on funds, their questionable life choices play out disastrously over six seriously unhinged episodes in Season 2, where just when you think things can’t get any worse, they do.

7. The Summer I Turned Pretty, Season 3
Where Can I Watch It? Amazon Prime
Few love triangles have been as divisive or socially dissected as that of Belly Conklin and brothers Jeremiah and Conrad Fisher. In all seriousness, some may even have written a thesis on it by now. And yet, we’re still without an answer – who does she love the most? In the third and final instalment of this coming-of-age series, we return to Cousin’s Beach for one last summer to find out once and for all. Or will we? While the YA book trilogy the series is based off may end with a winner, writer Jenny Han has taken creative liberties in her adaptations before. Here’s to hoping she puts us out of our misery forevermore.

8. Too Much
Where Can I Watch It? Netflix
Dubbed ‘an expat rom-com for the disillusioned’, Lena Dunham’s highly anticipated return to television arrives via her brand new series Too Much. Starring Hacks’s Meg Stalter and The White Lotus’s Will Sharpe, the ten-episode drama follows Jessica (played by Stalter), a freshly heartbroken mid-thirties New Yorker who takes a job in London. There, she meets a red-flag-laden Felix (played by Sharpe), and she’s as good as gone. Thanks to Dunham’s extensive showbiz rolodex, the cast also includes Naomi Watts, Rita Wilson, Rhea Perlman and Emily Ratajkowski, with guest appearances by Jessica Alba, Rita Ora and Andrew Scott.

9. Untamed
Where Can I Watch It? Netflix
The last time we saw Eric Bana in a series, he played a very convincing Dirty John. Now he’s back as Kyle Turner, a National Parks Service agent who is tasked with solving a murder in the depths of California’s iconic Yosemite National Park. The six-episode mystery thriller also stars New Zealand’s Sam Neill as Paul Souter, Turner's long-time friend and the park’s chief ranger. A mix of Yellowstone and True Detective with a dash of Ozark’s darkness, Untamed will make you think twice about that camping trip among the trees.

10. Washington Black
Where Can I Watch It? Disney+
Many years in the making, Washington Black is a stirring adaptation of Esi Edugyan’s 2018 acclaimed coming-of-age novel of the same name. Set in 19th century Barbados, the eight-episode series follows George Washington “Wash” Black (played by Sterling K. Brown), who was born into slavery but envisions a better life for himself and pursues it. Forming an unlikely bond with the plantation owner’s brother, Titch, the two end up on an adventure across the world as they discover new lands and reinvent themselves. An expansive tale exploring history, friendship, and ultimately, freedom.
