5 Tips for Choosing the Perfect Linen Colours for Your Bedroom
We understand it can be an overwhelming decision.
Given we spend a significant proportion of our lives in bed, we may as well do it right. And this means investing in high-quality mattresses, pillows, bed frames, and sheets.
We already know that linen sheets are just about the best thing to put on your bed: durable, temperature regulating, soft and light, it’s kind to skin and help you sleep like a dream. But when there is such a wide variety of colours to choose from, how do you decide which shade to choose?
There are a few handy tips you can apply when it’s time to choose what colour you want to purchase for your bed. It’s all about considering your personal style, overall home decor and bedroom environment.
Below, we look at five things to consider when choosing the perfect linen colours for your bedroom.
1. What’s your personal style?
Your home is often an extension of your wardrobe, which means if you’re drawn to certain colours when it comes to your personal style, they’ll often be reflected throughout your house.
Think about the colours that you love to wear, especially when it comes to your cosiest, softest, most relaxing and soothing items of colour, such as knitwear and loungewear. These are the clothes that will conjure up the warmth and calm vibes that you want when you’re in bed, too.
Drawn to warm neutrals? Opt for our Oatmeal, Oatmeal & White Stripe, and Terracotta colourways. These tones keep your space looking classic while also feeding subtle warmth into a bedroom for a cosy vibe. If you want to go a bit deeper in tone, our Hazelnut, Rust, and Cacao tones and a rich look to a space.
If you prefer to keep it cool and fresh, Coast, Sage, White, and Mineral should be your go-to tones. And if you want a bit of vibrancy, Turmeric, Pink Clay, Wildflower, Limoncello, Paprika, and Lilac are where it's at.
2. What's your overall home decor scheme?
It goes without saying, but when choosing bed linen colours, you need to think about the rest of your house. Do you have a colour scheme at home? If yes, what is it, and how can your bed linen work within that scheme? It doesn’t mean your bed linen has to perfectly match the colours throughout your home, but ideally, you want there to be a theme that runs across the different rooms in your house – and the bedroom is no different.
If you’re a fan of monochrome and Scandi minimalism, then minimalist colourways such as White, Fog, Charcoal, and Oatmeal will be for you. If your house is a maximalist dream with plenty of bold colour accents and bright details, you need to try the Turmeric, Pink Clay, WIldflower, or Rust sheets.
3. What's the vibe of your bedroom?
The bed is the focal point of your bedroom, and whatever colour you decide to have for your bed linen will change the look and feel of the room. Some colour choices are crucial in that respect. For example, if your bedroom is small or lacking in light, having white or very, very light-coloured sheets will help the room feel bigger and less dark.
Conversely, if you feel like the decor in your bedroom is sparse, or there are big expanses of blank wall space, choosing a bright colour for your linen – such as Petrol, Turmeric, or Paprika – will liven up a monochromatic space.
Spend some time looking at your bedroom and thinking about the environment you are trying to create there. Sheets, and the colours that you choose for them, are one of the best tools you have to do so.
4. What's your sleeping style?
If you’re someone who struggles to get to sleep at night, you need to think carefully about the colour of your bed linen. Some shades can be disruptive to circadian rhythms, stimulating the brain and preventing you from getting a good night’s rest. We’re talking about red, for example, which is a big no-no in the bedroom.
Here at Bed Threads, we don’t sell any colours that will disrupt your sleep patterns. But if you’re someone who does need a little extra help nodding off, it makes sense to choose a colour that will be the most soothing for you. Try Charcoal: the richness of the shade will create a blackout effect when the lights are switched off, swathing you in darkness and helping to ease you into sleep.
Also, while red can be disruptive for those who have trouble sleeping, more muted tones such as Rust or Lavender are cosy and inviting.
5. Would you mix and match?
Are you ready to try something new? Block colours are great, and we love having a bed decked out in one beautiful, richly pigmented shade; but here at Bed Threads, we’re also a fan of mixing and matching. Our linen colours are all designed to be thrown together, which makes choosing which shades to style with each other a very fun decorating activity.
