Artist Gabrielle Diamantis’ New Collection Is an Ode to Sunkissed Australian Summers

We take a tour of the emerging Australian artist's beach shack studio.

No home is complete without great art. No matter how chic the furnishings, a room with bare walls often feels unfinished. But you don't need a large collection of priceless paintings to bring a space to life – a unique print will do the trick. Our most recent artistic obsession is Queensland artist Gabrielle Diamantis, whose latest collection of prints brings summer vibes in spades.

From her sunny beach shack studio in Peregian Beach, Gabrielle celebrates her love of colour, texture, and intricate details through her vibrant paintings. She draws inspiration from sunkissed Australian summers and the beauty in everyday life, creating works that add pops of joy and colour to any space.

In her latest collection, she has harnessed the essence of calm, cool summer vibes, creating evocative works that pay homage to the laidback Australian lifestyle. These four exclusive Gabrielle Diamantis x Bed Threads prints double as postcards from summers past and will add a splash of colour and character to your home.

Join us as we take a tour of her home studio by the beach and hear about her creative process, her career journey, and her fabulous new artworks.

Hi Gabrielle! We're so excited to have your artworks at Bed Threads. Can you please share a bit about this collection of artworks?

With this collection, I wanted to create calm, cool summer vibes by the ocean. Artworks that can work into any space in the home and complement the Bed Threads linens.

What was the inspiration behind them?

A soft earthy colour palette inspired by Bed Threads linens. Food, fashion, florals, the ocean, old-school beach shacks, and, of course, colour.

Can you tell us how your art relates to your personality and who you are?

I feel like I am a fairly relaxed and simple lady. I love colour and feel like a lot of what I paint reflects this. I have always found beauty in the simple things. I love to recreate beautiful scenes, people, flowers, and foods I see in everyday life. Finding perfect in the imperfect.

How would you describe your art style?

I'm not sure what the technical style of my art would be described as, but I would say it's a little naive, figurative, and still life. Maybe a little bit of lots of art styles put together!

Are there any recurring themes or concepts in your artwork? What draws you to explore these themes?

I think my colourways are the most recurring theme in my artwork; colourful but earthy. Also food, women, and Australian beach shacks. I love exploring the beauty in the simple things.

Tell us about your career journey to date. Did you always know you wanted to pursue this line of work?

I truly believe we are all born to create in some form or another. I was always creating something as a kid. Both my parents are super creative and brought me and my four siblings up encouraging us to explore our creative side. I have always wanted to pursue something in the arts as an adult but never dreamed I would be able to make it my job! I'm a full-time mum to five, so most of my time goes to them.

Painting and fibre art were really only hobbies for me till about three years ago when Jules from Green House Interiors asked to represent my work. Since then I have been blessed to make art my part-time job with the kids in tow. I would love to pursue it full-time in the future when I have a little more time on my side.

What motivates you to create?

Creating keeps me sane! It's what I crave to do most when I want a moment to myself, need to feel grounded or just want to escape and do something just for me.

What is one artist tool you can’t live without?

Paints of course! Haha.

Who are your biggest artistic influences?

There are so many but the main influences would have to be food, fashion, florals the ocean and old school beach shacks and of course colour.

Talk us through your creative process. Where do you start?

I am not a great planner when it comes to my art. Usually, I'm inspired by a photo, something I see on a walk, a beach trip or something that pops up on my Pinterest. I always start with a colourway I've seen and create an artwork from there.

How do you balance the business side of being an artist with your creative work?

I don't feel like I have balanced the business side of being an artist just yet! I'm a full-time mum to five most of my time goes to them. Mother by day, artist by night or when I get a few moments to myself. I might have to come back to this question in the future. For the last couple of years, I have made a conscious effort to only take on what I know I can handle. The creative side comes easily. I am still learning the business side.

How do you handle creative blocks or moments of self-doubt?

The best thing I can do when I come up against creative blocks is to get off the devices and soak up life with family, friends and nature. There is so much inspiration just in the everyday simple things. I am blessed to have an incredibly supportive family and friends who encourage me and lift me up when self-doubt comes knocking.

Can you share any upcoming projects or ideas you're excited about?

I have been super lucky this year to be able to collaborate with a few amazing and inspiring creatives, such as Cleonie Swim. @noosacook and, of course, Bed Threads. These projects will all be launching soon and I'm so excited to share. I am working on a mini-series that will be released in time for Christmas through Green House Interiors. I think these go live in November and I also have a few new and exciting things in the works but won't be ready to share till next year.
