The 1970s Are Back – But Not As You Know Them

From conversation pits to chocolate-toned palettes, the decade of depth is making a comeback.

After years of cool neutrals and pared-back spaces, interiors appear to be warming up again. The resurgence of 1970s design marks a decisive shift away from the restraint of tonal ‘greige’ palettes and towards spaces defined by tactility and personality. Where recent trends prioritised minimalism and visual calm, this new wave embraces atmosphere: think enveloping textures, earthy colour palettes, and furniture designed for gathering (not just display).

But rather than feeling nostalgic for nostalgia’s sake, the renewed interest in the 1970s speaks to a broader cultural desire for spaces that feel comfortable and, well… human. As our homes continue to function as places of work, rest, and connection, interiors are evolving to prioritise adaptability and a sense of ease and softness. The appeal of the decade lies in its inherent warmth – an approach to design that values materiality and lived experience over perfection.

“I believe the 70s resurgence is a complete pendulum swing in reaction to the past decade of cool, minimal interiors dominated by ‘millennial grey,’” says Shona McElroy, principal at Sydney-based smac studio. “After years of pared-back palettes, the design industry – and clients – are craving warmth, personality, and a greater sense of comfort. The rich, earthy tones of the 1970s (browns, ochres, deep blues, and rusts) bring an immediate softness and lived-in feeling that feels both grounding and inviting.”

“There’s also a strong emotional pull,” she continues. “The era evokes a sense of nostalgia tied to social connection – intimate gatherings, conversation pits, and spaces designed for hosting and lingering. In contrast to the hyper-digital, fast-paced world now, these interiors suggest a slower, more tactile way of living with ease and fun that people are craving.”
